[BUG] Virtual Memory
Well...
I got two hard drivers and two partitions.
C: - Windows
D: - Backups, etc...
Before,my virtual memory was set as"automatically manage paging file size for all drivers".
So I decided change ...
C:- Windows - No Pagination
D: - Backups - System Managed
My hd C is in constant use, so I decided to balance the loads.
When i click in OK, they says "alread have a file called pagefile.sys" (all right, it's true)
I press yes to overwrite the file and...... the application hungs, no way to kill they. (taskmgr or taskkill, even logoff, restart or shutdown!)
Ihave not tried to reproduce the bug more times.
Some one here have the same trouble?

Is this a fresh install of Windows 7? Did you partition the drive(s) and format them with the Windows 7 disk? Or, is the D: drive a leftover from a previous installation of Windows? Which disk contains the boot loading sequence (prior to starting to load Windows)? What I suspect is that the BIOS posts, then turns the boot over to the D: drive, which in turn turns the boot over to Windows on the C: drive. - John

Let's me explain better.
Before (When i have Vista installed)
C: - Windows Vista (normal windows files & programs)
D: - Programs, downloads, backups, etc
I have burned the w7 iso and formated my C:
So now:
C: - Windows Seven (normal windows files & programs)
D: - My old programs installations, downloads, mp3s, etc...
I dont have a second OS, the both HD and partitions are formated in NTFS.
It's two HD's and one partition for each.
HD1 - C: - 250GB
HD2 - D: - 1TB

Yes, fresh one installation in C:.
No, my HD's are not partitioned.
My drive D: was not formatted when I installed the w7 and was used inmy previous Windows Vista.
The drive C: has the boot loading sequence, the drive D: don't boot anything (is just for storage).
My problem is "on the windows".
When i change the memory virtual settings, the "SystemPropertiesAdvanced.exe" hangs...
Thanks.

Sorry, but, no one confirms the problem?

W7 cannot access the pagefile.sys created by your Vista install, you should delete it. To do that you will need to be logged in as an administrator then take ownership of it, and delete.

I think is not this...
I have made more tests.
1. Started my computer (pagefile in c: & d:)
2. Disabled the virtual memory in c: & d:
3. Click in OK and HANGS!
Well, waited, nothing, just restarted my computer.
So, i go to C: and D: and have deleted my pagefile.sys in both partitions.
Well, they are deleted with successful, so they aren't in use.
Again:
1. Restarted my computer (check pagefile.sys in c: & d:, doesn't exist)
2. Enabled virtual memory in partition d: only
3. Click in ok and HANGS again...
So!?!?!?
Restarted again, the pagefile is not created and is not working! Now, i am using the windows without virtual memory, they don't enable it to me anymore.
Btw everytime i set a new config of virtual memory the process "SystemPropertiesAdvanced.exe" hangs and don't close in anyway.
Any ideias? it's only here in my computer?or no one test this?

Do you have another hard drive that is just sitting around? If so, try this.
Remove or disconnect your current D drive.
Install the unused drive
Delete any existing partitions and format
Set its drive letter to D
Set your Virtual Memory settings to now use the newly formatted D drive
See what happens. If you get the same response as before, then you have satisfied the requirements of calling it a bug as you have eliminated any hardware or permission issues. If things work normally, then you may have other configuration issues that will require further investigation.

Unfortunatly i don't have another hd...
Btw i don't think that is the problem, because...
1. I have made a fresh install of the windows seven.
2. Now i don't havepage file, so i have tried to set it to C:
3. C: have all permissions setted by the own w7. (right? it's like your theory)
4. It hangs again, so i think if i made the same thing you said, the problem will be the same.
So i think is not permission or hardware problem, i have two hd's, both are with problem? just becausei have formated my computer? i don't think so.
No one can try this?
Remove the pagination file and try to set it again after a reboot?
Maybe is not a bug, btw is a serious problem.

It was not necessarily my theory, but stranger things have happened. Whenever you troubleshoot anything, whether it is electrical, logical, or mechanical, you must rule out influences and possibilities by isolation.
When you say it hangs, do you mean no activity at all? Does the mouse still move? Can you invoke Task Manger with <CTRL><SHIFT><ESC>? Unfortunately, the term hang differs from person to person.
I have tried by moving my virtual memory to my D drive, my E drive, and my F driveall of which are separate physical drives. In each case, all worked well when I did the required reboot. I am not experiencing the same issues you are having. Maybe someone else on the forum can try and see if they can reproduce the error.
Good luck.

Thanks for the tips ^^
Well my "hang" is the application only "SystemPropertiesAdvanced.exe" don't close, don't open, don't nothing!
My computer still running normal, i left my computer 30 minutes idle and the screen don't disappear.
If i press ctrl+alt+del and try end the process, they don't close ever. Is a misterious bug...
If i send a "taskkill /F /T /IM systemprop*" they don't close too!
I have opened the process explorer and tried to kill explorer, and all the three of the process, no result!
I close all handles and try to close the process, nothing! can't suspend, can't kill the threads nothing... I never see nothing like this.
For example, if my process hangs now and i try to restart, logoff or anything the windows don't shutdown. They stay running because the damn process can't be killed.
My only solution is press the "restart" of my computer case. Got it?
My "solution" is open process explorer, close all handles and threads, btw the process still running and don't close ever!
So, now, if i try restart my computer by the start menu, it works, otherwise, no...
That is my "solution" for now.
I have set my pagination file by regedit. That is my "solution 2" :P
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\
PagingFiles = d:\pagefile.sys 6144 10240
Restarted and..... voil! works perfect.
My problem is just that utility to set the configuration of virtual memory, understand?
My windows seven is running very well, just that utility hang's in a "nice way".
Hang's = stop working and don't close, btw don't affect the rest of system. Just a annoying window opened in blank.
Thanks anyway.

Cool. When you initially wrote hang, it was not totally clear to me that it was a specific process.
Being that I never had an issue with a Virtual memory settings, it is nice to know the registry key for times when manual intervention is required.
That is a kick a$$ solution.
